When does a construction project need a dedicated full-time safety professional?
There is no universal OSHA rule mandating a dedicated safety person, but most project owners and large GC contracts specify one above certain thresholds. Common triggers include projects over ten million dollars in contract value, more than 50 workers on site simultaneously, or high-hazard operations such as deep excavation, crane erection, or confined space entry. Many public-sector contracts and data center owner requirements specify a full-time site safety manager regardless of project size.
What credentials should a project safety professional hold?
Recognized credentials for construction safety include the Certified Safety Professional (CSP) from the Board of Certified Safety Professionals, the Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST), and OSHA 500 or 501 for Authorized Outreach Trainers. For supervisory roles, OSHA 30-Hour Construction is a baseline minimum. Competent person designations under OSHA for fall protection, excavation, and scaffolding are separate from credentials and must be verified for the specific hazards present on the project.
