Advanced manufacturing facilities carry a hazard profile that's fundamentally different from construction sites. Where construction hazards are often obvious and visible, manufacturing hazards are frequently embedded in routine operations — a machine that's been running without incident for years, a confined space accessed quarterly, a chemical stored in a container that's never been formally assessed. OSHA's General Industry standards (29 CFR 1910) require written programs, employee training records, documented inspections, and permit systems for dozens of processes across a single facility.
The gap between a manufacturing facility that's operating and one that's compliant is often much larger than management expects. Lockout/tagout (LOTO) programs have to be machine-specific, documented, trained, and periodically audited — a generic program doesn't meet the standard. Confined space permits require a written program, trained attendants and entrants, atmospheric monitoring, and emergency procedures. PSM-covered processes require a process hazard analysis reviewed on a specific schedule. Lockout/Tagout
Machine-specific energy control procedures are required for every piece of equipment with hazardous energy. A generic LOTO program doesn't satisfy OSHA 1910.147, and each procedure must be documented, trained, and audited annually.
Confined Space Entry
Many manufacturing facilities have unidentified permit-required confined spaces. OSHA 1910.146 requires a written program, trained attendants and entrants, atmospheric monitoring, and an emergency retrieval system for every permit-required space.
Industrial Hygiene
Chemical exposures, noise, heat stress, and ergonomic hazards require documented monitoring programs, action thresholds, and medical surveillance where OSHA standards mandate it.
Machine Guarding
OSHA 1910.212 requires guards on every machine with moving parts that could cause injury. Missing or improvised guards generate citations and create serious injury exposure on any OSHA inspection.
