Structural steel erection is one of the most hazard-dense phases of any construction project. OSHA 1926 Subpart R requires a site-specific erection plan and fall protection plan signed by a qualified person before the first column is set — and most project delays during steel trace back to safety plans that weren't in place when the crew mobilized.

Buildings and civil infrastructure projects — from multi-story structural frames to highway bridges, retaining walls, and public works construction — share a core set of hazards: structural steel erection, concrete formwork and shoring, heavy equipment operations, and excavation. These are all areas where OSHA's Construction standards (29 CFR 1926) are detailed, specific, and actively enforced. A structural steel contractor who doesn't have a site-specific fall protection plan before the first lift, or a concrete subcontractor without an engineered shoring system for a long-span deck, creates both a safety exposure and a significant citation risk.

Structural Steel Erection

Concrete Formwork

Shoring and reshoring for elevated slabs requires an engineered design reviewed by a qualified person. Formwork failures are one of the leading causes of catastrophic incidents in construction.

Crane Operations

Structural steel and precast erection are crane-intensive. Assembly/disassembly plans, operator qualifications, and lift plans are all required under OSHA 1926.1400 before any crane moves a load.

Excavation and Trenching

Foundation and utility excavations require soil classification, appropriate protective systems, and documented inspections by a competent person before workers enter.
