The excavation hazard is often underestimated on site development projects because most trenches are utility trenches for water, sewer, and drainage — work that looks routine but statistically isn't. A trench collapse in stable-looking soil can happen in seconds. Proper shoring, sloping, or trench box deployment is required for every excavation over 5 feet, and the competent person has to make that call every day based on changing soil conditions.
