Why This Matters
A worker in the swing radius of an excavator or in the blind spot of a reverse-moving dump truck has seconds to react, and often can't. High-visibility vests and clear spotter communication aren't optional; they're the difference between a close call and a fatality investigation.
Key Points: Read These Aloud
- Never enter the swing radius of heavy equipment: excavators, cranes, concrete trucks: without direct eye contact with the operator and a clear go signal.
- High-visibility clothing (ANSI Class 2 minimum for most construction, Class 3 near roadways) is required whenever working near equipment or vehicle traffic.
- Spotters are required when equipment has a limited field of view or when backing in congested areas. Establish communication signals before work begins.
- Tools at height must be tethered. A dropped wrench from 30 feet hits with more force than a rifle bullet. Use tool lanyards and toe boards on scaffolds.
- Establish exclusion zones beneath cranes, hoist areas, and elevated work. Mark with barricade tape and hard barriers, and enforce them.
- Truck drivers must exit the cab before loads are dumped near workers. Never stand behind or beside a backing vehicle.
- Never walk under a suspended load, even briefly. Crane load limits include the rigging weight: verify sling ratings before each lift.
Discussion Questions: Ask Your Crew
Q1What equipment is moving on this site today, and where are the swing zones and blind spots our crew needs to stay clear of?
Q2Does every equipment operator on site have a designated spotter today, and have they established their communication signals?
Q3Have you ever had a close call with moving equipment? What happened and what should have been done differently?
